🌿 Ingredients (for 3–4 servings)
Main:

Broken wheat (godhuma rava / daliya) – 1 cup

Water – 2½ cups

Vegetables:

Carrot – 1 small (finely chopped)

Beans – 6–8 (chopped)

Green peas – ¼ cup (fresh or frozen)

Cholam (sorghum)or corn – ¼ cup (boiled/steamed)

Grated coconut – ¼ cup
For tempering:

Coconut oil – 2 tbsp

Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
-
Urad dal – 1 tsp
-
Chana dal – 1 tsp
-
Green chili – 2 (slit)
-
Dry red chili – 1 (broken)
-
Curry leaves – a few
-
Ginger – 1 tsp (finely chopped)

Onion – 1 small (finely chopped)
🍳 Preparation Steps
1. Cook the Cholam

Wash and soak cholam for 3–4 hours (optional for softness).

Pressure cook with water and a pinch of salt for 3–4 whistles until soft.

Drain and keep aside.
2. Roast the Broken Wheat

In a dry pan, roast the broken wheat on medium heat for 4–5 minutes until lightly golden and aromatic.

Keep aside.
3. Prepare Tempering
-
Heat coconut oil in a thick-bottomed pan or kadai.

Add mustard seeds; let them splutter.

Add urad dal, chana dal – fry till light golden.
-
Add green chilies, dry red chili, ginger, curry leaves, and onion.

Sauté till onion turns soft and slightly golden.
4. Add Vegetables

Add chopped carrot, beans, green peas, and boiled cholam.

Sprinkle a little water and cook covered for 4–5 minutes till vegetables are tender.
5. Add Water and Salt

Pour 2½ cups of hot water into the pan.

Add salt as required.

When water starts boiling, slowly add roasted broken wheat, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
6. Cook the Upma

Reduce flame to low.

Cover and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, till wheat absorbs all water and turns soft.
7. Finish with Coconut

Once cooked, add grated coconut.

Mix well and drizzle a little coconut oil on top for flavor.

Close lid for 2 minutes and let it rest.
