 Here’s a simple and tasty Vendakka Mezhukkupuratti (Stir-fried Okra/Lady’s Finger) recipe — Kerala-style 🌿👇


🧅 Ingredients

  • Vendakka (Lady’s finger / Okra) – 250 g

  • Small onions (shallots) – 6 to 8 (sliced)

  • Green chilli – 2 (slit)

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp

  • Chilli powder – ½ tsp (adjust to taste)

  • Salt – to taste

  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp


🍳 Preparation Steps

  1. Wash and cut okra:

    • Wash the vendakka and pat dry completely (no water should remain).

    • Cut into 1½ inch pieces.

  2. Fry the okra lightly:

    • Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a pan.

    • Add the chopped vendakka and sauté on medium heat for 5–7 minutes until they are slightly crisp and no sliminess remains.

    • Remove and keep aside.

  3. Prepare the seasoning:

    • In the same pan, add 1 tbsp more coconut oil.

    • Add sliced shallots, green chillies, and curry leaves.

    • Sauté till onions turn light brown.

  4. Add spices:

    • Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, and salt.

    • Mix well for a few seconds.

  5. Combine and fry:

    • Add the fried vendakka back to the pan.

    • Mix gently so the masala coats well.

    • Stir-fry on low flame for 5–6 minutes until everything turns dry and roasted.


🌿 Tips

  • Always dry the okra well before cutting — this reduces stickiness.

  • For extra flavor, you can sprinkle a pinch of crushed pepper or add 1 garlic clove (crushed) while sautéing onions.

  • Serve hot with rice and moru curry or sambar.
